Myself having a retail store for over 10 years now there are several things which I have learned about drawing customers into your store and getting them to come back which is as important as getting them there. One all to many people love the smell of the store, however the most important things are, quality, variety and location of the product are all equality important but if I had to put one above the other I would say quality first and foremost, then location and last but hard to to there is variety.
The benefits of quality brings people back, people may pick up a package of what I call commercial incense or free market incense to get them by but if they know a shop which carries quality they will not return. Astral Sea has had several retailers which started carrying our incense at their local flee market and one story I use often. When he first started carrying our line of bulk incense people said he was over priced so he tried giving a few away, the people loved them and in about the course of a year all the other incense vendors stopped carrying incense because people no longer wanted them. He is now the only vendor selling incense at a market of over 7,00 to 10,000 people per day.
Variety is also a key but the variety you carry is important as well. Select fragrances which apply to the clientele you wish to appeal to, however it does not hurt to have a few fragrances to attract a new line of customers, you never know they might start coming in for other products you carry and that is one of the reason to add incense to your line of products.
Now for the location, for many people incense are a impulse purchase which requires them to be where most everyone passes by. Our incense line is 4' tall by 16' wide right next to the checkout line (picture coming soon) which is over kill for most retailers but as the manufacturer we have to carry them all. For the incense lover, location is only important for them to discover them, once they know you have quality incense they will go straight to them.
